McPherson State Lake Located
on the west side of the wildlife refuge consists
of a 46 acre fishing lake and a
206 acre campground area for
public use. A boat launching facility and fishing
docks are provided as well as rest rooms, |
fire rings and picnic tables. You need to bring drinking water for your initial supply, additional water is available at the tour area, also emergency phone during weekend tour hours.
The self-guided nature trail at the southwestern corner of the campground area is open year around. You may pick up a brochure and follow the guide posts along the way.
The lake supports fair to excellent populations of Channel Catfish, Black Bullhead, Black Crappies, Red-Ear Sunfish, Blue gill and Large Mouth Bass.
Birders Welcome - Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and the Lake area are popular with visiting birders. More than 100 species have been identified. Eastern Bluebirds are often seen along the Blue Fird Trail of 25 Boxes. Bird brochures are available at the tour center.
