            Directions

From I-35 North, take exit 72   at  Lindsborg,   Kansas (Roxbury exit) travel 10 miles to Roxbury, KS turn South 5 miles to entrance to the refuge. 


From I-35 South, take exit 60 at McPherson, Kansas to Highway 56 East.  Travel 10 miles to, Highway 86 at South edge   of   Canton,   Kansas.  (Notice Billboard and other signs identifying Canton as Gateway to Maxwell) Travel North 7 miles to entrance to refuge. 
 

From Wichita, take exit 34 (Abilene exit) North on Highway 15 for 23 miles, take Highway 56 West for 5 miles to Highway 86 at Canton go 7 miles North to entrance.   

          
                     Friends Tour Center, Gift Shop and Displays

  All tours depart from this central    location. The center offers prairie   displays of Native American   artifacts, animals, mountain men,    cowboys and early day    farming. Bird and wildflower   brochures are available at the   center. Our one of  kind gift shop features items pertaining to the prairie, such as buffalo, coonskin caps, drums, dream catchers, etc.  Groups are welcome to use the shaded picnic area. A life size elk statue welcomes you to the refuge Friends Tour Center.

      
Maxwell is located on the new Prairie Trail Scenic Byway of Kansas, a 54 mile byway through the beautiful smoky hills, with 3 cities, Canton, Lindsborg and Marquette and the attractions of Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, Kanapolis State Park and Mushroom Rock State Park. Area is located in the Smoky Hills and consists of rolling native prairie grassland Dakota  Sandstone Soil, trees,  shrubs, spring   fed   streams,   ponds,   and wildflowers, perfect
habitat for the many species  of  animals  and  birds  that  call Maxwell home. Maxwell is located close to the Santa Fe and Chisholm trail.

Traveling into the refuge on Pueblo Road you will notice signs identifying, headquarters for Kansas Wildlife and Parks, guided tour entrance, observation tower and McPherson State Lake. 
 
Observation Tower
The observation tower is located on the   highest point of   the refuge and offers a beautiful view of the Maxwell prairie.  Animals  can  sometimes  be seen from the tower.
